About
Who We Are
Mitsue “La Pura” Johnson, Flamenco Dance and Cante performer, teacher and co-owner of Solo Flamenco has studied the art of Flamenco dance for many years in Spain, Japan and the United States with such renowned instructors as Domingo Ortega, Maria Bermudez, Rafael Campallo and Laurena Marrone. She has also studied Cante Flamenco with Ana de los Reyes, Vicente Griego and Maria Bermudez. The first dancer to be awarded a solo performance through Solo Flamenco’s non-profit organization, Mitsue has performed alongside many accomplished artists including Vicente Griego, Ricardo Diaz, Jaime del Rio and Laurena Marrone.
Caring, hardworking, and focused, Mitsue’s acute ear for tone as well as her rigorous studies with Cante masters have rewarded her with the ability to create beautiful song while she dances. Offering the student an authentic Flamenco experience highlighted by excellent technique, professionalism, and comprehension of the Baile and Cante, Mitsue has been praised for her ability to create a fire and passion for Flamenco in so many of the students who walk through the Solo Flamenco Arts Academy’s doors. The students at Solo Flamenco range in age and experience level, but one thing they all have in common is a want to learn how to express themselves through the exciting and fun art of Flamenco!
Why We Are Special
Solo Flamenco was founded in 1999 by Laurena Marrone, a renowned dancer who specifically focused on the unique Flamenco style of Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, where she made her home in the late 90′s. Considered one of the most competent improvisational dancers in the US, Laurena is known for her ability to express the anguish and power of Cante Flamenco through movement, unhindered by choreography or the need for excessive rehearsal. In 2008, Laurena left the company in the capable hands of Mitsue and Chris Johnson, who have promised to carry on the tradition and foundation Laurena so lovingly nurtured.
It is with this care and devotion to Flamenco that this company continues to teach new students of all interests and abilities. Our students stand out in the Flamenco community for their talent, expressiveness and devotion to the Solo Flamenco Arts Academy. If you don’t believe us, ask some of them for yourselves!

Please read the descriptions for every class that you might be interested in, and then be prepared to discuss with La Pura what level of dance is most appropriate for you. A student not sure of their level should attend a Flamenco Dance Level 2 class first for evaluation by an instructor. We offer beginner through advanced courses in Flamenco Dance for people ages six and up. We also offer sessions in Cante and Guitar. Begin your Flamenco journey to today with Solo Flamenco!
